The Project
Indoor pool, indoor problems, indoor solutions
Indoor pools look simple from the outside (literally). They aren’t. The shell goes in like any other pool, but the mechanical and environmental scope is completely different — ventilation, humidity control, finish materials that survive constant moisture, equipment access that often only opens once. This Ivanhoe build worked because the architect and our team coordinated everything from sketch stage.
The brief
12m of lap-swimming corridor, year-round, indoors.
Outdoor lap pools are a Melbourne compromise — usable maybe seven months a year without heating, plus six weeks of the other five if you really commit. Indoors, the season runs January through December. The brief here was simple: make swimming a year-round routine, not a summer hobby.
Why Fastlane
Long and narrow — designed for laps, not for splashing.
The Fastlane shape was built for serious swimmers. Twelve metres of unobstructed corridor with a walk-in step zone at one end. No swimouts breaking the swim line, no shape variation distracting from the geometry. Indoors, the rectangular plan works particularly well — the eye reads pool / wall / pool, the room reads as a lap-pool space.
Pacific Bi-luminite
A clean bright blue that holds its colour under artificial light.
Bi-luminite ceramic-core colours hold their tonality across daylight and artificial light better than gelcoat colours do. Pacific is fresh and bright — reads beautifully in natural light through the glass roof, and stays itself under evening LED lighting. Indoor pool colour selection has to work for both light regimes.
Mechanical access constraints
Indoor pools have one access window — before the roof goes on.
Once the indoor space is glazed and weatherproofed, every component the pool will ever need has to be inside it. We sized and staged the entire mechanical plant for that one delivery window: filtration, heating, dehumidification, lighting, controls. Indoor pools reward early coordination with the architect more than almost any other build type.
